Why should I study Mental Health First Aid?

This Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England course is designed to teach you how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis using the ALGEE Action Plan. MHFA teaches people how to recognise those crucial warning signs of poor mental health and provide early intervention to guide someone to appropriate support. It will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis. Not only will these skills allow you to help someone else but they can also be applied to your own wellbeing. Who is this course for?

While this course is best suited to those who have a keen interest in helping others, this course can be attended by anyone as no prior knowledge of mental health is needed. The skills learnt on this course can be applied to a variety of situations including; the workplace, family & friends, the local community, as well as your own mental wellbeing.

As an Mental Health First Aider you will be able to:

  • Recognise those that may be experiencing poor mental health.
  • Step in and provide early intervention using the ALGEE Action Plan.
  • Use enhanced interpersonal skills (such as active listening and empathy).
  •  Empower recovery by signposting effectively.
  •  Practise self-care.
  • Know how to use the MHFAider Support App®.

Everyone who completes the course will get:

  • A certificate to say they are a MHFAider®.
  • 3 years of access to the MHFAider Support App with 24/7 digital support, exclusive resources, and ongoing learning opportunities (CPD).

Course Structure

This course can be completed both online or face-to-face and involves taking part in 4 sessions over 2 days.  Each day will start at 09:00am and finish around17:00pm.

The first session looks at setting out what Mental Health First Aid is, their role and an introduction on how to use the ALGEE action plan to help others. This session also looks at a range of statistics around mental health, the importance of self-care and the use of helpful and unhelpful language. This session finishes by looking at a number of useful models and tools such as the stress container and frame of reference which can all be use to help yourself and others.
Session 2 starts by looking at what influences mental health, risk factors and protective factors. It then looks at what anxiety is, different anxiety disorders and how to help with panic attacks (crisis first aid) and traumatic events. The session also focusses on the ability to actively listen and apply empathy as skills to help a MHFAider. The session finishes by looking at eating disorders, self-harm and substance misuse.
Session 3 starts by practicing the skills learnt from the previous day when applying the Mental Health First Aid action plan. The session then focusses on spotting the signs and symptoms of depression and suicide as well as what to do if they see these signs. The session looks at crisis first aid for suicide and how someone might go about dealing with and talking to someone who may be suicidal. The session finishes by focusing on psychosis and how a mental health first aider may help in this situation.
Session 4 starts by looking at recovery and lived experiences of mental ill health. The session also looks at the boundaries in the MHFAider® role as well as how the role might be implemented appropriately. The session finishes by looking at the My MHFA action plan ​to work out how you plan to implement your training.

MHFAider® Support App

MHFA training doesn’t stop when the course comes to an end. The MHFAider Support App offers continuous support and development, well beyond the initial certification to ensure those trained can lead impactful MHFA interventions. The app empowers MHFAiders® with the following features:

  • Secure conversation logging to make reflective notes while protecting confidentiality
  • Reminders for wellbeing check-ins with people being supporting
  • 24/7 text support service through Shout, for advice and reassurance on a Mental Health First Aid conversation or to support their own wellbeing after a difficult conversation
  • Resource library of toolkits, guidance, animations and core mental health concepts to support them in their role as a MHFAider®
  • Signposting database through Hub of Hope to find local and national mental health services for additional support

Do you deliver this training in person?

Yes. Our instructors deliver this training across the country. If you would like us to come to your workplace and deliver the course in person, please contact us directly via email or phone.

How long does the course take to complete?

This course takes 2 full days to complete. Typically courses run from 9:00am till 05:00pm both days. However, different timings can be arranged for private course. Contact us for private courses.

Will I get a certificate when I finish?

Providing that you complete all 4 sessions of the course, the instructors will sign you off and you will receive your certificate. For online courses you can immediately download a PDF version of your personalised certificate.

How long does the certificate last?

The course needs to be refreshed every 3 years to stay in date.

What are the benefits of completing this course online?
