This introductory unit looks at why it is so important that health and safety is managed effectively, as well as your role in this. To do this we look at health and safety statistics from around the world, the legal, moral, and financial reasons for managing health and safety, the benefits of good health and safety and the responsibilities of a manager.
In this unit we look at the definition of a hazard, what a risk is, what a risk assessment is and how to carry out a risk assessment. This unit involves looking at a number of case studies to assess the risks as well as examples and risk assessment templates.
In this unit we look at how to control the risks through putting risk assessments and risk controls into practice. We also look at how we might decide what risk controls to use and the principles of prevention.
In this unit we look at health and safety law. This involves looking at key legislation, the different types of law, how the law is enforced and what the law requires you to do.
In this unit we look at the common hazards within the workplace, the potential effects the hazards may have and how these hazards can be controlled. This unit will expand your knowledge of the many hazards that can be faced in the workplace such as working at height, hazardous substances, alcohol and drugs, manual handling and more.
In this unit we look at why an incident should be investigated and how we might go about conducting such an investigation. We also look at defining terms such as: ‘incident’, ‘accident’, ‘near misses’ and the different levels of causes. This unit also looks at what a health and safety management system is, the purpose of health and safety management systems and the key parts of health and safety management systems.
In this unit we look at the 3 principles for good health and safety performance, performance indicators, monitoring systems and their uses as well as internal and external auditing.
As part of the Managing Safely course, you will need to carry out a risk assessment based on your own work environment and then get it assessed. A risk assessment template is provided in the course which you can use. Once you have completed the risk assessment it can then be uploaded for one of our tutors to mark.
After you have completed and passed all of the units, you will have to complete an end of course assessment. This online assessment contains 30 multiple choice questions that must be completed within 45 minutes. In order to pass, you must achieve at least 36 points out of a possible 60. You can attempt the end of course assessment a maximum of 2 times. If you do not pass on the second attempt, you will need to retake the entire course before attempting again.

How long does the course take to complete?

This course officially takes 21 hours to complete, however we find our learners often complete it much quicker. This means you can complete the course at your own pace. And don’t worry, you can pause and come back to where you left off whenever you like. This means you can fit the course around your other commitments easily.

Will I get a certificate when I finish?

Once you have completed the course, your results will then be sent to IOSH. Your digital IOSH certificate will be emailed to you in 2-3 business days. If you would like a printed certificate this can be requested.

How long does the certificate last?

IOSH recommend refreshing this course at least once every 3 years. Although, some employers and industries may require you to complete training more frequently, as such please check with your employer if you are unsure.
