Keep learning organised across the whole practice

Online staff training for GP practices allows a practice to assign and record appropriate online learning for different members of its workforce through one central platform. Practice managers, receptionists, administrators, GPs, nurses, pharmacists, additional roles, supervisors and facilities staff have different responsibilities and exposure to risk.

What training is mandatory for GP practice staff?

There is no single universal course list that applies identically to every person working in every GP practice.

Requirements may be influenced by role, CQC regulations in England, employment and health and safety law, professional standards, information governance, safeguarding frameworks, risk assessments, local policies, services, equipment, medicines, insurer or commissioner requirements and guidance in the relevant UK nation.

  1. Identify each role and its responsibilities.
  2. Record the source of each training requirement.
  3. Confirm the correct subject, level and delivery method.
  4. Distinguish online awareness from practical or competency-based training.
  5. Assign appropriate learning.
  6. Record completion and review renewal requirements.
  7. Update the training matrix when roles, services or guidance change.
Mandatory staff training guide

Supporting training oversight and evidence

For regulated providers in England, CQC Regulation 18 concerns staffing and Regulation 17 concerns good governance and appropriate records. Training records can contribute to evidence, but certificates alone do not demonstrate every wider requirement. MoreCPD is not approved or endorsed by CQC and does not guarantee compliance or inspection outcomes. Other UK nations have different regulatory arrangements.

Online workplace learning does not replace clinical competency training

GP practices may require basic life support, infection prevention, vaccine training, anaphylaxis management, equipment training, medicines management, chaperone training, specialist safeguarding, clinical updates, practical moving and handling and role-specific competency assessment outside the standard library. Online awareness does not replace practical assessment, supervised clinical practice, competency sign-off or professional registration requirements.

MoreCPD learner certificate records showing completed staff training

Turn training requirements into a manageable plan

A practice training matrix may record staff member or role, subject, required level, reason or source, delivery method, completion date, renewal or review date and evidence location. MoreCPD can provide completion evidence for learning delivered through its platform. Your wider practice training matrix may also need clinical, practical and externally provided training.

See which MoreCPD courses have been completed

From Starter upwards, practices can add learners, assign courses, monitor progress, view completion, access certificates, review renewal dates, send reminders and produce reports. MoreCPD records learning completed through its platform and does not determine mandatory training automatically.

Support good information-handling awareness

Primary care teams handle sensitive personal and health information. Generic e-learning should be used alongside practice policies, access controls, incident procedures and NHS-specific requirements; it does not automatically satisfy the Data Security and Protection Toolkit.

Choose safeguarding training by role and responsibility

Clinical and non-clinical staff may require different safeguarding levels. General awareness learning is not a substitute for higher-level or specialist training, local policies, named leads and reporting procedures.

Suitable for individual practices and PCNs

Individual practices can use role-based assignments, completion records, certificates and renewal reminders. PCNs and groups should contact MoreCPD to discuss how learner accounts could be structured; this page does not promise unverified multi-site administration.

We help set up the platform

  1. Confirm learner numbers.
  2. Provide the organisation logo, staff details and chosen course list through the secure existing process.
  3. Assign appropriate learning.
  4. Monitor progress, certificates and renewal dates.
