UK employer training guide

Mandatory staff training, mapped to the work people actually do

A practical way to identify relevant workplace training, assign it by role and keep useful records together — without treating a generic course list as a substitute for your own risk assessment or professional advice.

Plans start at £18 + VAT a month for one learner and £45 + VAT a month for up to 10 staff. Published plans require a 12-month commitment.

How to identify requirements View staff training plans

There is no universal UK mandatory training list

The right training depends on your organisation’s activities, risks, people and arrangements. Begin with the work and the outcomes you need, then decide which learning method is proportionate.

Statutory

A requirement set by legislation or official regulation may apply to particular work, risks or roles.

Mandatory in practice

A client, insurer, funder, contract, professional body or internal policy may require evidence of learning.

Recommended

Training may be a sensible control or awareness measure even where no single rule names a course.

Legislation and guidance can differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Check sources applicable to your workplace and seek specialist advice where appropriate. MoreCPD is a training platform, not a legal adviser.

Mandatory staff training questions

Is there one mandatory training list for every UK employer?

No. Training needs depend on the work you do, the risks you manage, individual roles, your sector, contractual expectations and the UK jurisdiction in which you operate. Some subjects have specific legal or sector requirements; others are recommended because they help people work safely or follow your organisation’s policies. MoreCPD provides practical training support, not a universal legal checklist.

How should we decide which training each employee needs?

Start with your organisation’s applicable requirements, risk assessments, workplace procedures and role responsibilities. Map the resulting learning needs to job roles, then review whether online awareness learning is suitable or whether practical instruction, supervision, assessment or a regulated qualification is also needed.

Does completing an online course make our organisation compliant?

No. A course can support awareness, induction and evidence of learning, but completion alone does not guarantee compliance. Employers remain responsible for deciding what their organisation and employees need, putting suitable controls in place and checking that learning is understood and applied.

Does MoreCPD cover England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

MoreCPD is a UK training platform, but requirements can differ between jurisdictions and sectors. Check the applicable guidance for where your organisation operates and consider specialist advice where needed. We can help you find relevant courses in the current catalogue without determining your legal obligations.

Can we assign different courses to different roles?

Yes. From Starter upwards, the manager LMS lets you manage employees and course assignments, monitor progress, retain certificates and review renewal dates. This supports a role-based training matrix rather than assigning every subject to everyone.

What are the staff training plans and prices?

Plans are based on learner bands. Solo is 1 learner at £18 + VAT per month; Starter is Up to 10 learners at £45 + VAT per month; Growth is 11–30 learners at £95 + VAT per month; Business is 31–75 learners at £195 + VAT per month. Enterprise is for 76+ staff and is quoted separately. Published plans require a 12-month commitment; annual billing is paid upfront.

Are IOSH and Mental Health First Aid included?

IOSH and Mental Health First Aid are outside the standard Staff Training Subscription library and are available separately. Contact the team if you need either option included in your training arrangement.
