What health and safety training should employees receive?

Employees should receive clear information, instruction and training about the hazards they may encounter, the risks those hazards create, the controls in place and the emergency procedures they need to follow. The precise training should reflect the employee’s role and the work they actually perform.

In Great Britain, employers are responsible for protecting employees and others from workplace harm. This includes providing adequate information, training and supervision. It does not mean every employee must complete the same generic course.

Health and Safety Executive guidance on deciding what information and training workers need

Where online health and safety training fits

Online learning can provide consistent awareness training, support employee induction and make refresher learning easier to organise. It works best as part of a wider health and safety system rather than as a replacement for workplace controls and supervision.

Online awareness learning is not a substitute for practical training where practical competence is required.

Online health and safety courses for your team

Choose relevant learning from the MoreCPD e-learning library and assign courses according to employee roles and workplace risks. New courses are added regularly, and the wider library remains available under the same subscription.

Match training to your workplace and employees

The appropriate training depends on your risk assessment, sector, workplace arrangements and each employee’s responsibilities. MoreCPD can help identify relevant courses, but the employer remains responsible for determining its legal and operational requirements.

When should employees receive health and safety training?

There is no single annual renewal period that applies to every health and safety topic. Keep suitable training records and review whether employees have retained and applied the learning.

Employee Health and Safety Training: Common Questions

Is health and safety training legally required for employees?

In Great Britain, employers must provide workers with clear information and instructions, adequate health and safety training and appropriate supervision. This does not mean every employee needs the same generic online course. Training should reflect the hazards, risks and responsibilities associated with the person’s work.

What health and safety training should employees receive?

Employees should receive training that helps them understand relevant hazards, risks, control measures, emergency procedures and safe working arrangements. The subjects required will vary by workplace and role. Risk assessments and official sector guidance should inform the final training plan.

Can employee health and safety training be completed online?

Many awareness and knowledge-based topics can be delivered online. However, online learning may need to be combined with workplace instructions, practical demonstrations, supervision or competency assessments. The correct approach depends on the subject and risk involved.

Does every employee need the same health and safety courses?

No. Some foundational information may be relevant across a workforce, but additional learning should reflect individual roles and workplace risks. Someone working with hazardous substances or specialist equipment will have different needs from an office-based employee.

Do office employees need health and safety training?

Office employees still need appropriate information and training about the risks and procedures relevant to their work. In a low-risk workplace, the training and instructions required may be simpler than in a higher-risk environment.

When should new employees receive health and safety training?

Relevant training should form part of induction and be provided before an employee carries out work for which they need particular safety knowledge or instruction. Additional training may be required when their role, equipment or working practices change.

Must health and safety training take place during working hours?

HSE guidance for Great Britain states that health and safety training should take place during working hours and must be free for employees.

How often should health and safety training be repeated?

There is no universal renewal period for every topic. Refreshers should reflect risk, legal or sector requirements, changes in work, incidents and whether previous learning remains current and effective.

Does a training certificate prove legal compliance?

No. A certificate records that an employee completed a course. It does not prove practical competence or demonstrate that every employer duty has been fulfilled. Training should form part of wider arrangements including risk assessment, safe systems of work, supervision and suitable controls.

Can managers track employee training and certificates?

Yes. From Starter upwards, managers can monitor progress and completions, retain certificates, review expiry information and export reports through the MoreCPD LMS.

How much does health and safety training for employees cost?

Solo access costs £18 + VAT a month for one learner. Team plans start at £45 + VAT a month for up to 10 learners. Growth costs £95 + VAT a month for 11–30 learners, while Business costs £195 + VAT a month for 31–75 learners. Enterprise pricing is bespoke for 76+ learners. Every plan has a 12-month commitment.

Is an LMS included with every plan?

The manager LMS is included from Starter upwards. Solo provides library access, certificate tracking and expiry alerts for one learner but does not include a manager dashboard, organisation branding or exportable team reports.

Are IOSH courses included in the subscription?

No. IOSH courses are separate from the standard e-learning subscription and can be purchased separately. MoreCPD can explain the available options and relevant subscriber discounts.
