Keep learning organised across your charity

Online staff training for charities allows an organisation to assign, deliver and record role-relevant learning for employees and other authorised learners through one central platform. Employees, trustees and volunteers are distinct relationships, and each individual account counts toward learner capacity.

Assign learning according to responsibilities, support induction, see progress, keep completion certificates together, monitor renewal dates and review reports for internal oversight.

What training does a charity need?

There is no universal charity training checklist. Training decisions may depend on activities, services, nation, people supported, role risks, work settings, contact with children or adults at risk, contractual, insurance and funder requirements, and charity policies and risk assessments.

  1. Assess activities, risks and responsibilities.
  2. Check current legislation and guidance.
  3. Assign suitable awareness learning.
  4. Add local induction, policies, supervision and practical instruction.
  5. Review when roles, risks or guidance change.

Safeguarding is a governance responsibility

Charity Commission guidance for England and Wales treats safeguarding and protecting people as a governance priority. Trustees should take reasonable steps to protect beneficiaries, staff, volunteers and others. Not every charity works with children or adults at risk, and general awareness does not replace specialist safeguarding training, policies, supervision, safer recruitment, DBS checks, local procedures or reporting responsibilities. Trustees retain governance oversight, while Scotland and Northern Ireland have different charity regulators.

These are areas to assess, not a mandatory checklist.

EmployeesRole-specific induction, safeguarding where relevant, health and safety, data protection, equality and workplace conduct
Managers and team leadersPeople management, safeguarding escalation, risk, supervision, wellbeing and local procedures
TrusteesGovernance and oversight awareness relevant to their duties; trustees are office-holders rather than employees merely because they are trustees
VolunteersProportionate induction, safeguarding, safety, data handling and conduct relevant to the volunteer activity; volunteering is distinct from employment
Fundraisers and public-facing teamsData protection, safeguarding, personal safety, communication and charity-specific procedures
Other authorised learnersOnly learning relevant to their relationship, activities, access and risks

Different relationships, one organised learning record

Employees, volunteers and trustees have different legal and organisational relationships. Trustees have governance responsibilities, while volunteers may need induction and role-specific instruction without becoming employees. Online learning should sit alongside local induction, policies, supervision and practical instruction.

See who has completed what

From Starter upwards, the manager LMS supports assignments, progress, certificates, renewal information and reports. MoreCPD is not a complete personnel, volunteer, governance or safeguarding record.

Charity staff training questions

What training do charity staff need?

There is no universal charity training checklist. Needs depend on activities, services, people supported, role risks, location, policies, funder or insurer requirements, and current guidance for the relevant UK nation.

Do charity volunteers need training?

Some charity volunteers may need induction and role-specific training. The appropriate learning depends on what they do, who they meet, the risks involved and the charity’s own procedures; volunteers are not employees simply because they receive training.

Do charity trustees need training?

Trustees may need governance and safeguarding awareness relevant to their responsibilities. Each charity should decide what is proportionate for its trustees and should not assume that trustees need the same learning as employees or volunteers.

Does every charity need safeguarding training?

Not every charity has the same safeguarding risks. Charities should assess their activities, contact with children or adults at risk, responsibilities and current guidance to decide what safeguarding arrangements and training are appropriate.

Can charity employees and volunteers complete training online?

Yes, online training can support awareness, induction and knowledge updates. It does not replace local procedures, practical instruction, supervision or competence assessment where these are needed.

Can different roles be assigned different courses?

Yes. From Starter upwards, the manager LMS supports learner and course assignments, allowing charities to assign learning relevant to responsibilities.

Can we track certificates and renewal dates?

Yes. Team plans provide completion records, certificate tracking, expiry information and renewal reminders through the manager LMS from Starter upwards.

Does online training replace charity policies, DBS checks or specialist safeguarding training?

No. Online training does not replace charity policies, DBS or other relevant checks, safer recruitment, reporting procedures, supervision or specialist safeguarding training.

Can MoreCPD support charities working across several projects or locations?

MoreCPD can help organise role-based learning and records for authorised learners. Contact us to discuss your requirements; this page does not promise unverified multi-site administration or permission structures.

How much does online staff training for a charity cost?

Standard shared pricing applies with no charity-only discount. Solo is £18 monthly or £180 annually for one learner; Starter £45/£450 for up to 10; Growth £95/£950 for 11–30; Business £195/£1,950 for 31–75; Enterprise 76+ is bespoke. Prices are before VAT and every plan has a 12-month commitment.

Is the LMS included with the subscription?

The manager LMS is included with Starter plans and above. Solo includes learning for one learner but does not include the manager dashboard.

Can IOSH or Mental Health First Aid training be added?

Yes. Need accredited training too? Mental Health First Aid and IOSH training can be added alongside your Staff Training Subscription.
