What training do nursery and childcare staff need?

There is no single course list that applies unchanged to every nursery, childcare provider or member of staff.

Training decisions depend on the UK nation, type of childcare provision, ages and needs of children, role and responsibilities, current statutory or regulatory guidance, identified risks, local safeguarding procedures, setting policies, and qualification or registration requirements.

  1. Check current statutory and regulator guidance for the setting.
  2. Map responsibilities and risks attached to each role.
  3. Separate online knowledge training from practical or regulated qualifications.
  4. Include setting-specific induction, policies and emergency procedures.
  5. Record completion, review competence and monitor renewals.

This is general information, not legal, regulatory or inspection advice.

For early-years providers in England

The Department for Education publishes separate Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) frameworks for childminders and for group and school-based providers. Providers are responsible for following the current framework applying to their provider type.

The current group and school-based framework includes safeguarding criteria in Annex C, staff induction information about emergency evacuation, safeguarding, child protection and health and safety, additional training for designated safeguarding leads (DSLs), paediatric first-aid requirements, and suitable food-hygiene training for staff preparing or handling food.

Online learning can support safeguarding knowledge, but providers remain responsible for selecting training that meets the current criteria applying to their setting and role. MoreCPD courses are not represented as EYFS approved, Annex C compliant, DSL training, paediatric first-aid qualification, regulated Level 2 or Level 3 qualification, or evidence of staffing-ratio eligibility.

Combine online learning with practical and setting-specific training

Online learning can support

  • Knowledge and awareness
  • Consistent introductory information
  • Flexible learning around shifts
  • Refresher learning
  • Completion records, certificates and renewal tracking

Providers may still need

  • Setting-specific induction and safeguarding procedures
  • Emergency evacuation instruction and drills
  • Supervision and observed practice
  • Practical competence assessments
  • Regulated early-years qualifications
  • Specialist DSL training
  • Suitable paediatric first-aid training

Current England EYFS paediatric first-aid criteria include practical and face-to-face elements. A generic online awareness course does not qualify somebody as a paediatric first aider.

Keep nursery staff training records in one place

From Starter upwards, the MoreCPD LMS helps managers add and manage learners, assign courses by staff member or role, view progress and completion, access completion certificates, record or track renewal dates, receive reminders, review or export reports, apply organisation branding, and receive onboarding and platform support. It helps organise evidence but does not guarantee compliance, successful inspection, practical competence or staffing-ratio eligibility.

Plans for individual learners and nursery teams

Solo can suit one learner, an independent childminder or an individual practitioner. Starter can support teams of up to 10; Growth and Business support larger workforces. Settings can give different roles different course assignments.

How childcare staff training works

Use a simple process to organise learning without presenting online courses as a substitute for practical or regulated requirements.

  1. Review your setting and roles

Identify your provision type, staff responsibilities, risks, policies and current training needs.

  2. Choose the right subscription

Select Solo for one learner or a team plan for your staff group, based on the people who need access.

  3. Set up staff and assignments

Add learners and assign relevant courses, induction learning and refreshers by role.

  4. Track training over time

Review progress, certificates and renewal information, then follow up on gaps and practical requirements.

Online Staff Training for Nurseries and Childcare: Common Questions

What training do nursery staff need?

There is no single course list that applies unchanged to every nursery, childcare provider or member of staff. Needs depend on the UK nation, provision type, children’s ages and needs, role, responsibilities, current guidance, risks, local safeguarding procedures, policies, and qualification or registration requirements.

Can nursery and childcare staff complete training online?

Yes. Online training can form part of a broader training programme, particularly for awareness, induction, refreshers and knowledge-based learning. It does not replace setting-specific induction, practical instruction, supervision or assessment where those are needed.

Does MoreCPD safeguarding training meet the EYFS requirements?

Not automatically. EYFS applies in England and the current group and school-based framework includes safeguarding criteria in Annex C. Providers remain responsible for selecting training that meets the current criteria applying to their setting and role; MoreCPD does not claim that a course satisfies Annex C or DSL requirements.

Can paediatric first-aid training be completed entirely online?

No generic online awareness course should be treated as the required full qualification. Current England EYFS paediatric first-aid criteria include practical and face-to-face elements, so providers must check the current arrangements applying to their setting.

Does MoreCPD training count as a Level 2 or Level 3 childcare qualification?

No, not unless a specific course is explicitly verified as that regulated qualification. MoreCPD CPD courses should not be treated as regulated early-years Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications.

Can different nursery roles be assigned different courses?

Yes. From Starter upwards, the manager LMS supports staff and course assignments, so practitioners, managers, cooks, office staff, students and other workers can receive learning relevant to their responsibilities.

Can MoreCPD track certificates and renewal dates?

Yes. Team plans include completion records, certificate tracking, expiry information and renewal reminders, with progress and reporting through the manager LMS from Starter upwards.

Is the LMS included in the subscription?

The manager LMS is included with Starter, Growth, Business and Enterprise. Solo provides one learner with library access, certificate tracking and expiry alerts, but not the manager dashboard or team reporting.

How much does online nursery staff training cost?

Solo is £18 + VAT monthly or £180 + VAT annually for one learner. Starter is £45 + VAT monthly or £450 + VAT annually for up to 10 learners; Growth is £95/£950 for 11–30; Business is £195/£1,950 for 31–75; Enterprise for 76+ is bespoke. Every plan has a 12-month commitment.

Can childminders use MoreCPD?

Yes. Solo may suit one childminder or practitioner, while team plans can support larger teams. Childminders remain responsible for checking the framework, guidance and training arrangements applying to their provision.

Can MoreCPD support several nursery locations?

Managing training across several nursery locations? Contact us to discuss your requirements. This page does not promise unverified multi-site administration, group reporting or manager-permission functionality.

Are IOSH and Mental Health First Aid included?

No. IOSH and Mental Health First Aid are separate purchases, with discounted subscriber rates where applicable. Contact MoreCPD to discuss options.
